retail many of these are playing in overtime. while it may not be what the pilgrims intended, for those flocking to the stores on thanksgiving it could be the start of a new tradition. >> eat turkey, and then put the kids to sleep with my mom and go without my husband. >> reporter: retailers hope shopping bags will be as full as shoppers' stomachs. kmart had three separate door buster sales. the first starting at 6:00 a.m. thanksgiving morning. these stores hope the black friday creep into thursday will keep the cash registers ringing all the way through friday night this year. >> it looks like all of the advertising and the earlier hours are going to pay off for retailers. >> we got here around 3:00, so not all night but it's worth it to see the looks on our family's faces when they open up their gifts. >> reporter: they are not alone. over the weekend more than 147

million americans are expected to shop, and spend. >> got mickey, we got some tools, we got the fire rescue stuff. i don't know what else i can do some damage with but i'm going to find out. >> reporter: black friday weekend can generate 30% of all retailers. >> there are better deals earlier in the year, later in the season. but black friday is that time when you can say okay, christmas is in the air. >> reporter: black friday is still an event for many americans it's lost some significance with the internet. more and more consumers are jamming servers from the couches instead of busting doors of the stores. in fact, ibm says thanksgiving online sales are up 18% from last year. online or in-store they are rolling out deals trying to bring consumers back for more. >> at the end of the day you're

broadway entrance between 34th and 35th street. i swear i was standing there for 18 to 20 minutes, and the line of incoming traffic never stopped. so people are definitely here, definitely shopping. there's bags in their hands so it's encouraging start to the holiday kickoff for black friday. >> it's interesting you note bags in their hands. so often we think of people as browsers who walk in and get caught in the frenzy. you're seeing people walk out with bags meaning they purchased something on this lead-up to christmas. what are the hot items i guess or things that encourage you this year? >> first of all, i don't know anybody that would be browsing at midnight on thanksgiving. if they aren't here on a mission i don't know who is. so we've had -- funny because i was standing at the door and they are asking me directions. tell me where the shoe department is, tell me where the blenders are sold. so i'm directing people back and forth. and so and those were two hot

categories, the small electrics category blowing out this morning, women's shoes up on the second floor here, new renovation, i mean that place is a bit of a mob scene. we had this 1999 boot that is selling like hot cakes up there. then in home furnishings lots of great luggage items, textile items. so throughout the store you're seeing lots of value. that was the key message for today. lots of value. >> a note that we're in tough economic times, recovery is slow, there are some signs of hope. this is the earliest thanksgiving has fallen on the calendar since 2007. as we counted there are now 32 shopping days. how do you equate that many shopping days with the reality that a lot of people face in their home with their own pocket books? >> well, first of all it is a challenging time for america, and i think in spite of that we know for the last 11 quarters now macy's has had record performance in sales and

earnings, so we understand the challenging time and therefore we really focused on giving great value of the best brands in the world. that's the combination that i think makes the macy's brand work so well. and so we're going to continue that into the holiday season. continue to make sure that we offer great value, recognizing that people are on a tight pocket book, and that's why you know, we've got to be really clear about the values. it's got to be obvious. it cannot be guesswork on the part of the consumer. i think that's what is working for us so far. you're going to see much more of that throughout the holiday season. it is going to be late. to your point this is the longest stretch between thanksgiving and christmas. i predict that november will be a little softer, december will be stronger but particularly strong toward the end of the december period. >> all right. best of luck to you and the retailers. thank you very much. now here's willy. >> thank you very much. now to a deadly highway pileup in southeast texas on thanksgiving. it left at least two people dead

and more than 80 others hurt. the carnage stretched for miles. amid the chaos there are stories of heroism. more we go to janet shanlin. >> once the fog lifted on interstate 10, the devastation was clear. more than 100 vehicles, including trucks twisted on top of each other, that left first responders rushing to pull survivors from the miles of wreckage. >> it was very hectic, you've got a lot of people that were traveling for thanksgiving today. so, being involved in a crash, you had a lot of injured people along the roadways and then people, some of them were still in vehicles. >> it happened thanksgiving morning about 8:00 a.m. just as many were taking to the road to visit friends and family. >> we were hearing car after car, boom, boom, boom. >> tamika and her family on the way to new orleans are rear ended by an suv. >> when they got out of the car

all we saw was that truck pushing our car from way back there to all the way up here. >> the suv that hit her car ended up under a tractor-trailer. the man and woman inside were killed. her daughter was the only one hurt in her car. and her injuries were not life threatening. >> thankful for life, for god sparing us. >> a little further up the line katie and her husband and two children pulled over as the cars ahead stopped in the road. they could hear cars hitting each other in the fog. katy, who is a nurse, ran back to help a family behind them, as the cars kept piling up. >> i was trying to get the little boy out of the car and then people started hitting us again and i realize it wasn't over. i jumped in the car on the boy's lap, closed the door and we braced each other until we knew it was done. >> the sheriff's office was grateful that despite chaos, so many uninjured travelers like katie came to the aid of those in need. for today, janet shamlian,

houston. >> here's tamron. >> now to the uneasy peace in the middle east. this morning violence broke out near the border of israel and gaza. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. eight days of fighting and people are feeling the effects. two more bodies were recovered yesterday under the rubble in a house destroyed by anirstrike bringing the death toll to 164. meanwhile, in israel children returning to school but the question on everyone's mind is whether or not this cease-fire will hold. more than a day after going into effect, a fragile cease-fire has been violated. israeli soldier killed a an israeli soldier killed a palestinian man and injured ten more on the gaza, israel border. it is not clear why they shot at the men on the palestinian side of the fence, but they

maintained a no go area on the board er to thwart attacks. there's much needed rainfall for the farmers. acre after acre, row after row of strawberries and eggplant locally grown for lucrative european markets, this is peak export season. the only problem with the war on the territory firmly in place, the borders are sealed off, effectively banning exports and depriving farmers and their families a key source of income to survive at a critical time this farmer tells me. lifting the siege and allowing for movement of goods and people was one of the demands to stop rocket attacks on israel. they celebrated the ceasefire across gaza, declaring it a victory for the people. the popularity skyrocketed in recent days. for they need immediate help, especially now that the tunnels used to smuggle farming supplies and weapons

according to israel were destroyed by israeli air strikes. israel reeling from the war after eight days of fighting, israeli industry lost more than $50 million. communities in southern israel are trying to get back to normal life here as children return to schools without sounds of the daily sirens. while communities on both sides try to rebuild in the calm the ceasefire brought, the fear of violence is never far from anyone's mind. now, the palestinian factions in gaza condemned that deadly attack this morning, though they're not saying they're going to take any retaliatory measures as of yet. for the time being, the concern or tension among ordinary people is not necessarily going to translate into any severe action that could jeopardize that calm. >> thank you very much. a check of the morning's top stories. thomas roberts is in for natalie. >> hi, willie, hi, everybody. fresh off the diplomatic

success, helping broker the ceasefire between israel and gaza, egypt's president granted himself far reaching powers effectively wiping out all authority away from egypt's judicial system and declaring the courts are barred from challenging any of his decisions. a united nations official expressed serious concern saying this could cause a volatile situation. a woman clowning around near the tomb of the unknowns and a worker that took the picture was fired. she was snapped pointing her middle finger shouting near an arlington national cemetery sign that asked for silence and respect. they took that on a paid trip by their employer. halle berry's ex-boyfriend released on $20,000 bail, after getting into a fight with her current fiance outside her l.a. home thursday. gabriel aubry was hospitalized and later arrested on battery

misdemeanor charges. aubry and halle are in a bitter custody dispute. it is back in business this morning. mary thompson joins us from the new york stock exchange. good morning. >> good morning, thomas. markets close early this post holiday session. investors are looking to build on recent games. s and p and nasdaq up the last four sessions. what's on focus? retail stocks, given we had the official kickoff for the shopping season, many yesterday. also investors watch greece where they continue to look for progress on dealing with the on-going debt problems. in los angeles thursday, hundreds of volunteers spent their thanksgiving holiday feeding those in need. thousands turned out at the l.a. mission for a warm turkey dinner that included all the trimmings. and this family likes to live life in the fast lane. house in china in the middle of the highway.

at tacoma general had deglad aman amanda's c-section to try to give time to get there. it wasn't an easy trip for the 25-year-old combat medic. for a month he had been begging his superiors to let him come home. amanda's doctors even wrote letters, but finally, after more than 25 hours of flying. >> that was the best surprise ever. it was amazing. you have to mess a lot of first when your spouse is in the military. he missed his daughter's first steps and just really nice he didn't have to miss out on his healthy son being born. that just really means a lot. >> reporter: a lot to be thankful for, for a war hero and his family all together and home for the holiday. for "today," kristen dahlgren, nbc news, los angeles. >> very nice. let's get a check of the weather from maria larosa in for al this morning. hi, maria >> good morning, tamron. gotten through thanksgiving and getting through black friday. let's get through the weekend,

course? >> we're constantly walking the course and checking out new lines and possibilities. >> reporter: lines refer to the routes that riders take to the bottom. they are judged on their speed, degree of difficulty and creativity, kind of like figure skating. you know where your line it. you don't have to spray paint your initials on it. lines are made. >> it's very meticulous determined how well thought out the person's run. this is one of the bigger drops and last year where cameron zinc pulled a 360. one of the best things about this contest it's kind of like using your own creativity and letting the land almost speak to you and kind of paint your own little picture. i know what you're thinking, these guys are crazy, right? darren says that couldn't be

further from the truth. we know exactly what we're doing and we plan for this and we train for this, and this is our home. >> reporter: the past calm of years bearcloth and a group of his riding buddies looked for new lines in british columbia, argentina, nepal and china's goby desert. where they went and what they did became this spectacular film called "where the trail ends." how many people in the world can say they mountain biked down the goby desert? >> there's five of us so far. >> reporter: if you want to know who you really are, sometimes it helps just to see how far you can go. darren set me up with a helmet, some gloves and a quick lesson. i feel like it's too much, too soon. from there it was all downhill. i did it. i did it.

locally. american express chairman and ceo ken chenault is here to tell us more about it along with karen mills, part of president obama's cabinet for the small business administration. ken, let me start with you. black friday, black thanksgiving night, cyber monday, why do we need a small business saturday on top of it? >> i think the most important thing is we want to celebrate small businesses and celebrate the communities where small businesses are, and what we've seen over the last two years, this is the third year of small business saturday. we've really built a tremendous movement, and small businesses have seen increased in sales, and that's what it's about. what small businesses want are more customers. >> true though, ken, that small businesses kind of needed this holiday because they were getting pinched and squeezed out by things like cyber monday and black friday?

>> those are delicious. >> flaky. >> you can freeze the roll here. >> for months, just great. >> what's our next one here. >> this is tapenade, what i did is sauteed onions and fennel together just for about seven to nine minute until they are really tender and lots of great things. i have sliced garlic, three cloves of sliced garlic. cook that for a minute. you don't want it to burn but cook a little bit, and it has complex flavors. cherry vinegar, tomatoes, crushed tomatoes from a can. figs which is unusual in a tampenade, brown sugar. >> a sweet dish. >> between the onions. >> and then capers to give it a little vinegary flavor. >> and lots of green olives which are great. >> this looks so good. >> cooks together eight to ten

we have an update to developing news. a deadly crash in palo alto is tying up traffic at embarcadero as the investigation continues into what happened. this is northbound 101. one person is dead and five others injured. officials say before 7:00 a truck was pulled over to fix a tire. a chp car pulled over to help. that's when this suv that you are looking at right now carrying six people ran into the chp car from behind. the suv flipped over. now a sigalert is in effect and will be for a couple more hours. traffic through palo alto is tied up this morning as the
